Mary Ann Evans, known by her pen name George Eliot, was an English novelist, born in 1819.

She published translations, poetry, essays, and journalism, and was among the greatest writers of her time. Her notable novels include, Adam Bede (1859), The Mill on the Floss (1860),  Silas Marner (1861) and Daniel Deronda (1876). 

Middlemarch by was first published in eight instalments between 1871/72.
