rare free souls

Writing group exploring self-expression through writing

“the free soul is rare, but you know it when you see it - basically because you feel good, very good, when you are near or with them.”

― Charles Bukowski, Tales of Ordinary Madness

Fortnightly online sessions

Writing is a unique form of meditation, the present now of pen on paper, as your eyes watch the processes of your mind and body manifest mental images into the physical world.

Rare Free Souls is a writing group that celebrates this magic. It's there for personal accountability and to encourage you to find self-expression in the daily and weekly practices of writing, from journal pieces, to letters, poetry, fiction, stories, articles, and even simple notes to self ... get it out of your head, and onto the page!

We will meet fortnightly for discussions about all aspects of our writing - why we write and how it feels; what we write and our reasons; how we write and how hard we find it to keep the practice going; what we get from our writing routine. Sessions will be varied, sometimes reflective and quiet, sometimes more focused and upbeat. We will write, sometimes we will read, we will laugh, maybe cry (not sure about that one) but most of all, we will try to express our tiny slither of life experience in our writing.

A note on the Bukowski quote. I chose it, not to sanctify the writer as superior - the ability to write is not ours alone, and anyone can express themselves through writing - but rather, because committing our thoughts, feelings, and ideas to paper, even if only for ourselves, never to be read by another, can help free us from the tyranny of overthinking, from the burden of carrying around all that mental baggage, and from the staleness of old, clung onto thoughts.

Free in this way, we are all rare free souls...
