Look out for this course in the Spring of 2010.
Truth In Fiction - Course Programme
Week 1 - Introduction
We open with an introductory session in which I will summarise each novel and give an overview of the main themes of the course. We will also have a chance to introduce ourselves to other members of the class, and outline our particular areas of interest.
Weeks 2 to 4 - The Good Soldier
We will cover various aspects of Ford’s novel including, analysis of the main themes, its language, style and symbolism, and the question of the unreliable narrator. We will also tackle wider issues such as the idea of identity as a narrative, how we judge what Truth is (and why it matters), and the problem of trusting first-person narrators.
Weeks 5 to 7 - The Remains of the Day
Ishiguro’s subtle and multi-layered Booker Prize winning novel is a masterpiece of repressed emotions and unspoken feelings. We will examine the novel’s basic elements - themes, style, language - and consider issues such as truth, class, loyalty, dignity and memory.
Weeks 8 to 10 - Atonement
McEwan’s structurally brilliant novel allows us to consider the main themes of the course from various different perspectives. The possibility of a “True” account, the consequences of our truth claims, and attempts to re-write the past, are all potential areas for of discussion.
